''What is happening in Mahwah and other areas is a positive development for Suffern,'' said Mayor Leonard A. Safe in the knowledge that only about 10 acres of commercially zoned property in the village remain undeveloped, some residents even detect a silver lining. The majority of Suffern's 10,794 residents, however, seem unfazed by the development. Other parcels, some within the village along Route 59, are also to be developed for commercial use. To the northeast, 40 acres off Airmont Road in the Town of Ramapo is being offered for offices.
The complex, when completed, is expected to provide employment for nearly 7,000 workers. Just to the south, in Mahwah, N.J., International Crossroads, a 3 million-square-foot high-rise office park is under construction at the site of the former Ford Motor Company auto-assembly plant. The pace of development, however, has begun to quicken into a boom in this 2.3-square-mile municipality 33 miles northwest of Manhattan at the interchange of Route 17 and the Gov. IN its tranquil setting at the foot of the Ramapos, the Rockland County village of Suffern seems somehow out of sync with its bustling neighbors to the south and east.įrom its quaint central business district, nearly surrounded by well-kept turn-of-the-century homes, to the northern areas where large properties off quiet country lanes overlook the western mountains, it seems more like a remote upstate hamlet than a village at the hub of one of the most rapidly developing areas in the New York metropolitan region.
